Gilbert & Sullivan: The Mikado. Robert Rounseville (Nanki-Poo), Stanley Holloway (Pooh-Bah), Groucho Marx (Ko-Ko). For good measure, Groucho's daughter, Melinda Marx, plays Peep-Bo. Adapted for television by Martyn Green for the NBC Bell Telephone Hour. Broadcast April 29, 1960. This is a studio recording of that performance. Transferred and restored from the original Columbia mono LP OL-5480. Just what every G&S fan dreams of: an abridged Mikado with Groucho Marx in a starring role, NYC accent and all. Oh well, Groucho was probably the bait NBC used for viewers and he was a G&S fan. He probably had the time of his life doing this.

Subject: The best of ephemera
A true Savoyard would be appalled. But this bit of ephemera is the very best of its kind. It's wonderful that such stuff is still around.

Subject: Thanks for sharing this recording
And you're right. I have read that Groucho -- who took few things seriously, but did revere the works of G&S from his early days -- had a complete blast getting to play this role.

Thanks again.
